Mineralogical analysis

The largest number of amethysts used for decoration was found in the Apollo’s Grotto, surrounding the statue of the sun god, who allegorically represented Bishop Karl. The amethysts discovered in the Kroměříž Chateau are of domestic origin. Radek Hanus, a geologist who specializes in researching precious stones in the Czech Republic and performed the mineralogical analysis, determined that the amethysts come from Květnice Hill near Tišnov. This finding is also confirmed by archival research.

In addition to the amethysts, other minerals and precious stones were found here, including opal, garnet, gypsum, barite, travertine, limestone, calcite, vein quartz, and pegmatite.

Decoration Made of Minerals and Shells

The grottoes are also adorned with various types of iron and glass slag, as well as the shells of freshwater and saltwater aquatic animals.
